Monolith (2023)
Concrete sculpture
Mountains of Taos, New Mexico | Permanent installation
Monolith is a portal, a frame, and a tribute to the land of New Mexico. Standing solitary against the mountains of Taos, this concrete structure is 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, built with 45 bags of concrete mixed-and-poured by hand. The sculpture’s foundation extends past the frost line – three feet below the earth – ensuring that the work weathers the passing seasons for decades to come.
The circular opening at Monolith’s center acts as a keyhole, drawing the viewer’s gaze beyond the structure to the sweeping beauty of the Taos landscape. As the sun sets, the mountains glow in golden light, framed within its concrete borders. The sculpture transforms the act of looking into an intentional experience, inviting passersby to pause, frame the landscape, and engage in a moment of quiet contemplation. Whether viewed from afar or experienced up close, Monolith blurs the boundary between built form and nature, serving as both a threshold and a destination.
